Scholarship Ministry About the Henry McNeal Scholarship Ministry

The love for children and concern for the future are key factors that initiated the creation of the Henry McNeal Turner Scholarship Ministry in 1984. The goal of the Scholarship Ministry was to provide financial support for high school graduates of Turner Memorial and was first envisioned by Mrs. Cleo H. White. When she approached then Pastor Rev. Goodwin Douglas with the idea he was ecstatic and said, “Praise the Lord!” He enthusiastically embraced the idea and pledged his support.

Rev. Douglas’ first action was to select members of what would be the scholarship committee. Each person that he asked to serve accepted without hesitation. Clearly, a scholarship ministry for students by and for the congregation was immediately received positively since there was such a need amongst members. Members saw contributing to the ministry as an excellent practice of stewardship and an investment in the future of our youth- indeed an investment in the future of our country.

Pastor Douglas suggested that we name the scholarship ministry in honor of Henry McNeal Turner, twelfth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. We felt it appropriate to follow the lead of our congregation’s founders who made this church a memorial to Bishop Turner. Henry McNeal Turner was a seeker of knowledge and lover of learning. He wrote the first catechism for the A.M.E. Church and was responsible for publishing many other books and printed materials. He was a fierce supporter of Black Nationalism and emigration of Black people to Africa.

The Scholarship Ministry is grateful to all who continue to contribute to the work of this ministry. The words of encouragement, the wishes for success, and the gifts of time and money are all of great value to our students. It takes each of us to fulfill the dream for a better future.
